Best Beaches in Puerto Vallarta

1. Hidden Beach (Playa Escondida)

Stuff of Legends

For a long time, Hidden Beach (or Playa Escondida) was just a legend carried all over the world through the whispers of intrepid travelers. Even now, though many people have made the trek to this unbelievable beach, photos of it will make you question its authenticity.

Could there really be a beach under a gigantic gaping hole in one of the Marieta Islands off the coast of Mexico? Yes, it's real, and visiting here is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to witness its phenomenal beauty firsthand.

Explosive Beginnings

Though the uninhabited Marieta Islands are thought to have been created centuries ago, legend has it that the hollow that makes Hidden Beach famous is only about 100 years old, and was created when the Mexican government conducted bomb tests here, causing an explosion that marked the birth of Hidden Beach.

Finding Your Way There

Getting here takes some effort. First, you'll need to book a trip out to the islands through an authorized boat service provider.

Then, you'll need to swim or scuba dive through an 80-foot tunnel to get to the shore of the tiny, white-sand-beach haven that awaits. But ask anyone who has done it: The trek to this magical place is well worth it.

While you're there, arrange to have your tour operator take you to see some of the other natural wonders of the Marieta Islands, which boast rich marine life and views of unspoiled nature.

2. Playa de Oro

Space and Solitude

When it's time to escape the crowds at the more popular beaches in Puerto Vallarta, locals and tourists alike know to head north to a serene stretch of beach that offers a little more space and solitude. At Playa de Oro, visitors will find a wide beachfront backed by high-rise hotels, where hotel guests relax under umbrellas but still leave plenty of room for other beach visitors.

Fun in the Sun (and Water)

Playa de Oro is a primary place for beachgoers to experience the waters of the Pacific, and it's therefore a hotspot for water sports enthusiasts. The waves here are divine, according to the surfers and bodyboarders.

Operators in the area can help get you set up to try a new activity or revisit an old one, whether it's kayaking, waterskiing or parasailing. If you decide to go for a swim, be careful—the surf here is quite strong.

Evening Activities

Later, after you've fully exerted yourself, stretch out on the sand or walk along the beach and watch the sun slowly disappear in the horizon.

Though all of Puerta Vallarta boasts amazing sunset views, Playa de Oro's laid-back vibe lets you experience it with very few distractions. Afterward, unwind even more with a cocktail by candlelight.

3. Playa Los Muertos

People's Choice

Most people who visit Puerto Vallarta make sure to stop by Playa Los Muertos, the most popular, vibrant stretch of sand  hugging Banderas Bay.

It's here that visitors get to experience the full charm of the Zona Romantica, and the revered sunsets that make up for the lack of coveted aquamarine waters found elsewhere in Mexico.

What to Do

Because it's flanked by major hotels and resorts, the area caters to tourists by offering almost every imaginable amenity for a fun-filled beach day.

After a dip in the warm water, be sure to head to the recently remodeled Los Muertos Pier, a modern, circular wonder that blends in beautifully with the rolling waves behind it. A number of fishermen try their luck on this pier, while couples gather to watch the unforgettable sunset.

Beyond the beach, visitors spend their days browsing the area's many stores and souvenir shops or getting a taste of the amazing local seafood dishes at seaside restaurants.

Savvy travelers make the most of happy hours featuring discounted beach beverages like beer or piña coladas.

Old Town Charm

Here's a tip for those who want to venture further from the manufactured experience offered at resort complexes: Head into nearby Old Town to explore this quaint village's cobblestone streets.

This area is home to tons of one-of-a-kind cafes, bars and shops. Pick up some fresh produce at the Old Farmer's Market, or pop into a little bookstore to snag some reading material.

If you're just passing through, at least grab a tasty taco from one of the street vendors in the village. Those sticking around until night falls will get a taste of the high-spirited nightlife scene that Puerto Vallarta is known for.
